There is something about an angular geometric print on a flowy garment that I just love. I don’t know why but, I’m here for it! As soon as I saw this print I knew that I had to make something with it and that it had to be something with some movement to it.

I had a lot of ideas and in the end settled on the Butterick B6455. It is one of their fast and easy patterns and it was definitely fast and easy. (This project won by a narrow margin against making a strappy summer dress. I’m probably going to have to do that for my next poplin project.)

I love sewing with cotton poplin in the summer. I know people might turn away from these crisper cottons because they think they will have to iron them but honestly, I find pulling them from the dryer and hanging them right away is usually good enough.

The thing that draws me to poplins time and time again though, is the incredible breathability. I get too darn hot in the summer so my summer wardrobe is full of this light, cool fabric.

Poplin is also great because there is such a variety of prints available but I don’t find it quite as sturdy as a quilting cotton which means you can have tons of fun with colour and pattern but it drapes better than a firmer cotton.

Ultimately the structure of this fabric makes it super easy to sew with. It doesn’t shift at all and takes a crease well when pressing back seam allowances. All this to say, it is a breeze to sew with and so it’s great for beginners and seasoned sew-folk alike.

For this top, I didn’t do much in the way of pattern adjustments other than adding some length. (I’m 6”1’ and added 2 inches at the waist) I did find in the end that it was a bit too baggy at the back. I solved the issue by putting a line of ruching across the back at my high waist. I simply used a length of ¼ inch elastic and secured it with a long zig zag stitch. For a flowy style like this I think it really works. Next time I sew up this pattern I will take a bit out of the back. There are four different views to this pattern so I need to do at least a couple of them.

One of my favorite things about this shirt is that the poplin has enough structure to it that the details on the cute, split sleeve aren’t lost. That is something than can happen with a fabric that has a lot of drape. I also love the options of being able to wear this shirt on or off the shoulders.

Until next time sew-friends, I hope you find a project that brings you joy. Happy Stitching!
