A long time ago I made a baby quilt for a friend and used a waffle weave fabric for the backside. After it was washed, it had the most amazing texture and became so soft. I've been wanting to make a quilt for myself with a waffle back, but had not found a fabric that would work - until now. I got the Espresso Brown Minerva Core Range Medium Cotton Waffle. This fabric was perfect! The fabric is 59 inches wide - so just barely wide enough for the back of my quilt. I got a 2 yard cut and the length was just a tad too short. I made the Vera Quilt by Bryan House Quilts. The quilt has a border and I ended up having to trim about an inch and a half off the top and the bottom. I don't think it's very noticeable. I almost added a border to my backing, but really wanted the entire back to be the waffle fabric. The fabric is a good medium weight and is not stretchy. It is soft and the texture feels really good and cozy. I haven't washed my quilt yet, but I anticipate the 100% cotton content will cause it to shrink. This shrinking should create a crinkle effect and make the quilting appear more in relief. For the quilting, I used my Tin Lizzie longarm and quilted the quilt with a Monstera leaf pantograph from My Creative Stitches. I used a variegated brown King Tut thread by Superior Threads on the back side and love how it blends into the espresso brown waffle. This quilt now resides on the back of my living room couch. I have three cats and they love to sleeps on the back of the couch. I try to keep the back of the couch covered in a quilt so that it can collect all the cat hair. It also adds a bright pop of color to my otherwise boring grey couch. The quilt will be washed frequently - all that darn cat hair - and I feel good that the waffle on the back should hold up well and last a long time.
