Green is a color I have been wanting to sew more and when I saw this Art Gallery poplin fabric with the small green accent stripe, I just had to have it. I was so excited to receive this fabric and see it in person and the green was just what I hoped, a perfect Kelly Green.
Now time to start the creative process which for me many times is some ready-to-wear online looking. I found a great inspiration called a baby doll blouse, which had some fun print mixing. I needed a great coordinating fabric, which I had in a blouse I made two years ago and never wore. Time to rework that blouse into something I would love. Now I did just used a bit of this polka dot but it was the perfect amount of contrast.
Back to the inspiration, the ready-to-wear blouse was so similar to McCall’s 7930, which I have made before. I love this McCall’s blouse but it needed some changes to make it better for me. First off, the slit is so very, very low. It doesn’t need to be that low, the neckline is wide and plenty of room. I moved the slit up about three inches. Also, this top is short, I added an inch to the peplum last time but even with high waisted jeans it is just a bit too short. This time I added one inch to the body of the blouse and another inch to the peplum. One final change was the neckline, I didn’t like how it went on my first blouse and as I tried with this one my feelings were the same. My change, was to cut the polka dot fabric and stitch it to the neckline, turn it to wrong side and hand stitched down. Oh, so much better and the contrast is nice.
Let’s talk about the fabric, it is such a perfect poplin, crisp, easy to sew but has some drape. That part is plus for this pattern. Another reason I knew I wanted to use McCall’s 7930, the pattern pieces for this top make great use of the striped. The front band, the sleeve band, bodice and peplum help the stripe shine even more with this pattern. I had planned on using a bit more of the polka dot for a hem band. I like to send pictures to my daughters for feedback, they voted no band. I was leaning that way and had already hemmed my peplum! On this McCall’s blouse, I didn’t use much of the polka dot but I did use it for a very cute blouse for one of my granddaughters.
This Art Gallery Fabric is 100% cotton and comes in three colorways. I enjoyed sewing this fabric and creating a very unique piece for my wardrobe. If you have any patterns that are great for stripe layout, grab this fabric up. Just think about a shirt with a yoke, front pocket or front band, those stripes would be perfect. Just like McCall’s 7930 was perfect for my use of stripes.
