Hi friends!
Today’s top feels serendipitous. When a new pattern releases and the perfect fabric just happens to be hanging around in my sewing studio, I can’t help but feel that way!
The new pattern by Chalk and Notch is the Wren Blouse and Dress, and I had the privilege of being on the testing team! I made my top in a size 10 blended to a size 8 just below the armscye. My upper bust placed me in a size 10, while my full bust, waist, and hips placed me in a size 8, then 6, respectively.
In a less fluid fabric, I feel this sizing would be perfect, however, in a drapey rayon it is definitely roomy all over. I had a moment of indecision, as my measurements have been fluctuating rather all over the place in the past year (who can relate!?), and decided to go with a size 10 when I should have stuck with my instinct and made the straight size 8 as I typically do with C&N patterns. 😊
So now that I have my sizing blunders out in the open, let's talk about the design and this amazing fabric!!
The Wren Blouse and Dress is a button-front blouse and a mini dress with a scoop neckline. The mini dress has a dropped waist with a gathered skirt and is loose and comfortable through the waist and hips. The two statement sleeve options are a short sleeve with a puff cap and an elastic hem and a long sleeve with a cuff. There are bust darts for all cup sizes and optional back darts for shaping.
I opted to omit the back darts in this version due to time constraints, but in other versions I’ve seen, they provide gorgeous shaping! I’m sure it would have been a beautiful option on this top, and if I get the urge, I may still go back and sew them in. 😉
I have a thing at the moment for gorgeous statement sleeves that are gathered at the hem, so I was thrilled with the release of this pattern! The sleeves combined with the button-front had me at hello!
This beautiful Art Gallery Rayon has been on my radar for quite a while, so I was absolutely THRILLED to be gifted a length of it to work with! Sewn up, it’s every bit as beautiful as I imagined. Blush pink and blues are two of my very favorite colors to wear, as well, so I feel amazing in the print and have already been reaching for it over and over!
AGF Rayon is one of my very favorites to work with. It has amazing fluid drape and is very light-weight without feeling flimsy. I prefer to use a microtex needle when sewing so as to prevent any snagging, and I find a walking foot helps to keep the fabric from shifting when sewing on the machine.
I’m so happy with my new blouse! It’s an absolutely perfect choice for spring. The origami sleeve is such a fun option and adds just the right amount of variation to make this top a bit more unique and interesting. I would absolutely recommend this pattern!! It’s a fun make, and has so many fun details.
Happy Sewing!
