Let’s talk about crinkle gauze. It’s such a fun woven fabric. It can be used for so many types of garments with its soft drape and interesting texture. It’s very breathable and great for warmer weather makes as well. The thing that gives crinkle gauze its uniqueness (the beautiful texture) also happens to probably be the biggest drawback to working with it. If you’re brand new to sewing with wovens, I wouldn’t recommend it as your first project, but it’s definitely something I’d keep in mind for the future.

Crinkle gauze comes to you off the bolt very smooth and drapey. Once you wash it, it’ll crinkle up into that distinct bubbly texture. Ironing it out before cutting into can be a bit of a pain, but it’s a definite must and worth it in the end. The photos I have taken here are all after ironing. I didn’t do the best job ironing everything smoothly, but it was enough for me to easily sew with. When I wash these pieces again, I will see how it crinkles up and decide if it needs regular ironing. I’m hoping not and that the crinkles will ease with wear.

This fabric is a cotton crinkle gauze in silver. Be aware that it is slightly sheer so whatever you make with it will need a lining or slip. I did find some snags in my fabric after washing, which could’ve happened in the washer/dryer so be careful with it as it’s a bit delicate. I considered making a drapey skirt or dress with this fabric, because I thought the natural crinkle would be perfect, but ultimately decided to go in a different direction.

I have been working my way through the Peppermint Magazine Sewing School which has a lot of wonderful free pattern resources. With this project, I chose the Loungewear Set by Common Stitch Patterns. I figured it would be a nice set to have around for the summer or around the house. The pattern itself was very straightforward with great instructions. It was simple to complete and I had no problems working through it.

For sizing, I made the smallest size for both the top and bottom: size A. I opted not to modify length anywhere for my first go. The fit is definitely oversized like it’s supposed to be, but not excessively so. The length of the bottoms are perfect on me while I don’t love the back hem of the top since I feel like it’s pretty long and a bit too baggy on me. Next time around, I think I would adjust it to have less of a high/low hem. Otherwise, I don’t think I’d make any other changes.

As a set, I think this is a great loungewear pattern. The fabric isn’t the best match, because it’s a bit sheer, but I think it’ll be worn more often in the summer when I will want the breathability of the fabric. For the current winter weather conditions, it’s slightly too chilly for me to wear this much, but I can definitely see myself wearing it as a swim coverup or as pajamas in the summer.
