The Wilder Gown from Friday Pattern Co and this cotton swiss dot fabric are a match made in heaven! I’ve never sewn with swiss dot fabric before, but I knew exactly what I wanted to make the second I saw it. Enter the Wilder Gown. I feel like this pattern took the sewing community by storm when it was released earlier this year and I couldn’t wait to make it with this swiss dot fabric. Although both the pattern and the fabric were new to me, I love what I ended up with. The swiss dot adds the perfect amount of textured interest and I can’t wait to keep sewing with it.

The Wilder Gown isn’t a style I’d normally gravitate toward, but I’ve loved all the versions I’ve seen so I decided to just go for it especially after seeing this swiss dot fabric. The style of the Wilder Gown is definitely outside my comfort zone, but I just couldn’t stop thinking about this pairing. This was a thoroughly enjoyable sew and I absolutely love the comfy and chic dress I ended up with.

The Wilder Gown has a variety of variations included in the pattern which makes it super versatile. I opted for the short sleeved, tiered dress option. Since I’m only 5 feet tall, I knew I’d have to make length adjustments right away. I made a size XS and shortened each of the skirt tiers by roughly 2 inches. I contemplated shortening the bodice too, but decided to leave it in the end. The finished dress hits me right below my calves and has the perfect amount of ease.

One thing I really love about the Wilder Gown is how easily you can change the look by selecting a different fabric base. I’ve seen a lot of flowy versions and love how romantic they look, but I really wanted a look that was slightly crisper. The cotton swiss dot fabric from Minerva achieved the exact look I was going for. This fabric is slightly sheer, offers a nice drape, and is super easy to work with. You will want to wear some sort of slip underneath or plan on lining it, but I could see this fabric working for a lot of woven garments. Personally, I would love to collect all the colors for a rainbow of options. For the Wilder Gown especially, I almost made a black version immediately after finishing this white one.

I haven’t had a lot of chances to wear this Wilder Gown out, but I’m very excited to have this in my wardrobe. It makes for an easy outfit to throw on and I could see this working for so many different occasions. I’m also excited to try out the other pattern variations and would love to make a top version next. Have you made a Wilder Gown yet? What fabric base would you make it with? Is it too much to have a Wilder Gown in black too?

Thanks for reading!
