Exciting happenings for our family, another granddaughter on the way and her big sister (4 years old) is super excited. Big sister wanted matching dresses for herself and cutie (her name for baby sister). I told her I would and when I saw this cute ladybug print, I knew I had found the perfect fabric for matching dresses. I sent a picture to my daughter, the mom and my granddaughter loved it. In fact, she called me a couple hours later and wanted to know If I had her dress finished! The fabric had just been ordered, so I did giggle on that question.

I used several different patterns for the dresses in this beautiful Little Johnny 100% Cotton Fabric Red & White ladybug fabric. I ordered 2 meters and used all except for about 6 inches. The fabric washed perfectly and was so easy to sew and press. I have to comment on the cute ladybugs, they are such a nice design and the ladybugs really show up on the white background.

For Cutie’s dress, I went with Violette Field Threads’ June dress, sizes 0 to 24 months and I loved the back. The combination of the back elastic and back opening. The bodice is lined and I used the ladybug fabric for the lining. I made the 0-3 months size and used red rick-rack for the bottom of the dress. I have yards and yards of red rick-rack, perfect use of it for this dress. I like to make diaper covers or bloomers for babies, I went with Simplicity 8614 for the bloomers. They go together quickly and they are the perfectly finishing touch to the dress. Check out the photo of the back of the dress and that cute opening and the elastic, I can’t wait to see her wearing it.

Next up, the dress for the 4-year-old, I went with another Violette Field Threads pattern, Peyton, sizes 2-10. I made a size 5 and it looks like the perfect size for her. She was so excited for the dress but didn’t want to try it on. The Peyton has several options, I went with the sleeveless one and the neck ruffle. I had the red buttons in my stash and more of the rick rack. I did use the lady bug fabric to line the bodice on this dress also.
I had just a bit of fabric left and thought an 18-inch doll dress, the 4-year-old would like that. I used to make these size doll clothes for her mom all the time. I pulled out my old doll clothes pattern and went with Simplicity 7688, which had a similar look to the dresses. It has sleeves but has the gathered skirt. Final touch was the rick rack for this one, too.
I love this set of dresses and suggested to my daughter a photo session this summer, in front of my flowers. Lady bug and flowers just go together, right? I love sewing for myself and sewing for my granddaughters, especially using such cute fabric for the little girls.
