I am so excited to participate in the
#sewnwithnewlookchallenge. I love a cropped wide leg pant and New Look 6643 fit that want. This pattern has zip fly, in-seam pockets, back pockets and belt loops. My initial plan was to use the denim I ordered at the same time I ordered the pattern. When that denim came in it was a shirt weight so I made a top from it, which you can see here at Minerva.
I took a look in my stash and had a great olive twill. This was my new plan and I posted it in my stories on Instagram. Not long after my stories, I received a message from a sewist who had made these and didn’t love the inseam pockets. She stated they didn’t lay the best. I love our sewing community, it is a group that is always sharing so others can make their best garment. I had started my pants but wasn’t to the front pockets yet, so this message came just in time. I pulled out my Ginger Jeans pattern and redrafted the front for a jeans style pocket. It was easy to do and more of the look I needed for my casual olive twill.
Here is what I did on the pants
-I cut a size 14 per the finished measurements.
- lengthened the back pockets by 1.5”, they just seemed short/little to me. I don’t like pockets that seem not in proportion to the garment.
-cut the full length as I am 5’8” and knew I would need that for the cropped length, I cut 1 inch off and put in a two-inch hem with this length
- changed the front pocket as mentioned above
-used a jean button for the front closure
I did not have a matching thread, so I went with an olive thread just a shade lighter the contrast is nice and puts a bit of interest on the pants. The New Look instructions were good and easy to follow. I always start pants with this thought, oh, they are going to take forever. Seriously, I don’t know why I do that, pants do not take that long to sew!
Comparing these to the True Bias Landers, which I feel have the same basic look, I prefer the Landers. They just fit me better and feel more comfortable. I might work on these just a bit to see if I can get the fit better. It is always nice to have options, plus would be fun to compare the two patterns to see the differences. Comparing the two might be a great way for me to learn more about fitting and fitting my body.
I had a pair of olive Landers and just wore them out so it is nice to have another olive pair of wide leg cropped pants in my closet. I find this color just such a nice basic to go with so many things. New Look patterns are always so fun to sew and I did enjoy this one.
