I FINALLY made a blazer!!!! Oh I am over the moon about this blazer and I felt like the pattern was so easy! I used this beautiful plaid from Minerva and a Liberty London cotton Lawn from my stash for the lining! I used the new Heather Blazer by Friday Pattern Company. I have several tips I want to share that I used along the way. It was actually an enjoyable make and the only fit issue I had was that my arms could have used an extra inch in length. Other than that, the pattern fit perfectly for me. I feel as though it is a very easy generalized fit and is not a very fitted blazer pattern. I enjoyed the relaxed, someone oversized fit.
The fabric is a wool/Poly blend and behaved beautifully throughout the project. I have a few tips for working with this fabric and the pattern and they are summarized below!
1. Cutting plaid- When cutting out your fabric, use a dominant line in the plaid and line it up with specific notches. I also used pieces that I had already cut and then cut the next piece by using the first piece. I hope this makes sense. Normally when you cut out a pattern and it says to “cut 2” you have to cut one as a mirror image. If your fabric looks the same on the front and back and has no “right side” then you can just lay the previous piece on top of the fabric and match everything exactly! Almost to where you can’t see the piece anymore! You can just cut that piece as your mirror image and this will ensure that they are exactly the same! For the side seams, it is very important to pay attention where these are and note the prominent plaid lines and notches!
2. Pressing- It was surprisingly easy to press this fabric even though there is an element of polyester. I think that it was essential to use steam using a steam iron or a spray bottle + iron. I also used a wooden clapper and that really sealed the deal for these seams.
3. Using the proper needle- You will want to use a larger needle size. I use a 90/14 but I think I could have used a bigger needle for sure. I think sewing would have gone a lot more smoothly!
4. I used the proper interfacing. The pattern specifically calls for certain types of interfacing for different parts of the jacket. Pay attention to this as it is pretty important! I didn’t have any trouble fusing the interfacing to this wool as it was not completely smooth and had something for the interfacing to grab onto.
5. Follow the YouTube! There is a small youtube demonstrating the hem that Friday Pattern Company provides. The pattern is very good to follow and I did not feel overwhelmed just taking it a step at a time! I think that the video should definitely be referenced and you can click the link to it in the pdf pattern!
That’s all folks! I really enjoyed this make and I think it is so gorgeous. It really filled a void in my wardrobe and now I want to make all my tops match this blazer. So I can wear it more often right!
