Hi, I am Josie from @itisjosie and I am glad to be back here with another Minerva make.
When the fabric call out came, I could not help it. It was love at first sight when I saw this fabric and I knew it would pair beautifully with a summer dress. Yes, I am speaking of summer during winter but winter sewing is never as interesting. And with how popular shirring was last summer, I knew this summer dress needed to feature that too. I did my research and ended up with the Style Arc Ariana dress.
Rose & Hubble Cotton Poplin Fabric
This is a gorgeous floral cotton poplin fabric on a Navy background. It is a medium weight woven dressmaking fabric with a composition of 100% cotton. This fabric is recommended for dressmaking, quilting and the famous mask making. This fabric was very easy to work with and it is a beginner-friendly fabric. It both sewed and ironed up really well with no issues at all. This fabric is also stocked in an Ivory colourway which is equally stunning.
This pattern fabric recommendations range from linen, cotton to crepe and this fabric was perfect for this dress.
Ariana Dress by Style Arc
The Style Arc Ariana dress is a gorgeous button-down sundress with a fitted bodice. It features shaped bust seams and a shirred back which allows It to fit perfectly while being comfortable to wear. The skirt has gathers which falling from the waist and two large patch pockets. This pattern also comes with a midriff top too if you don’t fancy the dress or don’t have enough fabric.
This pattern come in many sizes ranging from size 4 to 30. The paper pattern comes in two size ranges: 0-16 and 18-30. And the PDF pattern version can be purchased in either a multi-size pattern or a single-size one. It is worth noting that the single size one comes with two other sizes one above and another below to allow for grading if needed.
This pattern is rated a medium and challenging and that is not far from the truth. If I must also say this, it does not come with instructions. What would be referred to as instructions can not hold anyone’s hand throughout the construction process.
Some of the challenging techniques in the construction process included shirring the back panel and sewing about 11 buttonholes. And the toughest challenge was actually putting the dress together based on acquired experience and knowledge.
The Making
I sewed up size 4 similar to my ready-to-wear size which fitted perfectly well. Although size 6 was the recommended size based on my personal measurements, it turned out big when I made a muslin. So I decided to go a size down which was better. The bodice part of the dress was self-lined with the same fabric which gave a neat finish on the inside too.
I only made two alterations to this pattern: I widened the straps to cover my bra straps and a sway back adjustment which is common to me. After all the changes were made, I have a beautiful dress which I plan to make more of.
Conclusion
There is nothing not to love about this dress. This gorgeous fabric paired up with this pattern is a match made in heaven. I know it sounds cheesy but it is my happy dress. Thank you for stopping by.
