As soon as I saw this colourful felted fabric I knew that it would look fabulous made up as a jacket. I was inspired by Claudia Winkleman‘s jackets on TV recently (The Traitors)and decided that this fabric using the Nina Lee Richmond Blazer pattern would be the perfect combination.
The fabric is from Minerva’s Core Range and is a 98% polyester 2% elastane felted multi coloured medium weight fabric 148cm wide with no stretch. It has a corded striped look about it which is rather unusual. It’s quite substantial yet has a soft feel. It was easy and not at all bulky to work with.
The Richmond Blazer is a simple jacket yet looks sophisticated and stylish. Its slightly oversized longline silhouette makes it a perfect everyday easy wear garment. With a single button fastening and neat collar and lapels it’s a tried and tested pattern for me. I’ve made it before and it worked well then. It did not disappoint this time although I did stress over the welt pockets. I always find them tricky especially in a heavier weight fabric and have yet to perfect the easy way of doing these successfully first attempt! I managed them okay in the end but had to unpick and re-stitch a few times before I was happy. You could have chosen any number of colours to line it with but I decided to use a brown lining material. I added shoulder pads which aren’t in the pattern instructions but I think just give it a bit more structure and shape.
This fabric has exceeded my expectations and I'm thrilled with the finished result! The multitude of colours in the fabric makes it a great match for so many things in my wardrobe and
I really like how warm and cosy it is.
Thank you Minerva!
