Pattern Description: McCalls 8139. Pocketed shirtdresses with length & sleeve variations. C has belt.
Pattern Sizing: 6-24. I made View C with short sleeves. The bodice was cut in a size 6 grading to a size 10 at the waist and hips.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, but I did not like how they jumped around between constructing the bodice and skirt. I made the bodice first, then the skirt, then joined them together.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
This pattern has a nice variety of options that you could use to make different shirtdresses depending on which sleeve and skirt you chose. Love the slash pockets and the silhouette is very sleek. I also love that View C has a slit in the back making it easier to walk.
Dislikes: I didn't love that the pattern did not call for a lined yoke, so I added one.
Fabric Used: Minerva Core Range 290gsm Soft Washed Denim Fabric Dark Blue (2m)
Originally I had planned to sew a jacket but this fabric is on the thinner side. However, It was perfect for a denim dress--nice and sturdy but not too thick. I also love the mid-blue wash.
Changes/alterations: I graded up to a size 8 at the upper back, did a 3/4" full bicep adjustment, let out the side seams at the waist (3/8" seam allowance). I skipped the fabric belt. I used a contrasting quilting cotton for the undercollar, yoke lining, and pocket/flap linings. I added extra topstitching details.
Would you sew it again? I'm not sure that I need another dress like this, but i am happy with the fit and there are quite a few different options, so maybe if the right fabric comes along.
Conclusion: I really love this dress and it will be a year-round staple for me. It will be easy to layer with a cardigan or blazer and I could even wear a turtleneck underneath for more warmth. I've wanted a denim dress for ages and after my first attempt at it shrunk in the wash, I think this is the one.
