When I was coming up with ideas for the clothes I wanted to sew for summer I knew I wanted a light, neutral, skirt to easily pair with the clothes I already own. Something that would make it easy to put together outfits and be breezy enough I wouldn’t melt while commuting to work in the summer. When I saw this broderie anglaise I knew it would be perfect. I’ve made a skirt in broderie anglaise before and I am still wearing it and still love it. However, that one is a two-tiered blue skirt. Super cute but a bit more difficult to pair together.

Friends and I decided during the spring we would dress up as Hobbits. We are nerds don’t worry about it haha. I realized this skirt could pull double duty! First, as a regular everyday skirt to put on to go to work and get groceries etc. and secondly, it could also be a hobbit petticoat and be worn underneath a darker outer skirt. It was a match made in heaven and I could not wait to get sewing.

I used the pattern for the Sabina Skirt by Little Pomegranate, which I have made a few times in the past. It’s an easy-to-follow free pattern with lots of tips and instructions. If someone was wanting to learn how to sew I would not hesitate to send them to this pattern. As a somewhat experienced sewist, I skipped a lot of the content which was easy to do. Also has a lovely pocket pattern. I steal this pocket pattern to use in other sewing projects. If I was intending to just use this a slip/petticoat I would leave off the pockets but I still wanted it to be practical for everyday use. And in my every day, I need pockets.

When I was almost finished with this skirt I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was missing something. So after leaving it for the day and muddling about I figured it out. It needed some lace details! The broderie anglaise is dainty and delicate and I wanted to highlight this with some additional details. I found this perfect lace detail to add to the hem. I think it is the perfect accompanyment and really suite the broderie anglaise. I ilke that it isn’t too flouncy or gaudy. It could also be really nice to add lace inserts to add some additional texture and visual interest. Perhaps nect time.

If I was to make this again I would add more body to the skirt for a tiny bit more poofiness. It’s not essential and I still really like the skirt so that is a minor detail. If you are going to make a skirt with this material I would advise you to either line the skirt or be prepared to wear a slip underneath. Excited for all the things I can pair this with! I especially love this with the green and purple combo!
