I like making all kinds of garments and usually after a more complicated project, I like to make a quicker and easier project. After finishing a jacket, I decided it was time for a knit top. Minerva gifted me a beautiful gray knit from their Core Range. This knit is Minerva Core Range Melange Cotton Jersey Stretch Knit Fabric in the gray. Minerva’s jersey knit is a great fabric, washes beautifully, sews beautifully and wears beautifully. It is all around a beauty! I went with the color Moonlight, a nice darker gray. I had my colors done and black isn’t my color instead it is gray or navy. This is a great basic jersey knit and you can get it in 56 colors, yes 56! I might need to order a few more colors to have.
I wanted to do a shirt that was a bit more than a basic t-shirt and a sewing friend had recommended Style Arc’s Rhea. The Rhea is for knits and has a center front and center back seams. The top also has dolman sleeves and only three pattern pieces, front, back and neckband. The sleeves are grown-on, an extension of the front/back piece. The top does take a bit more time to sew as there is a center front and center back seam. I do like the look of this as you can add a a nice topstitching at this seam. It could always be a more decorative stitch or a different color thread. Now I did not do this, matching gray thread and my coverstitch machine. The top does have a high- low hem but more of a gradual one. I did add one inch to the body length and the sleeve. The sleeve did get a bit tight on my forearm, so I will add a bit of width there.
The neckline on the Rhea is like a lower crew, not a scoop and not a true crew. This neckline would be easy to change to more of a scoop or even a v-neck. Also, such a great basic shape, lengthen it for a dress. I will be sticking with the t-shirt version, my lifestyle is more jeans and t-shirt. I do think this one will be perfect for the transition to spring. The moonlight color is light enough, my Rhea will be perfect for those color spring days.
