BURDA PATTERN HACK
You may have noticed I've been having a bit of a sewing binge!! Some new tops for a September holiday and filling in the wardrobe blanks, as the unpredictable British weather needs a few sleeves!
I'd noticed a few makes on Minerva for the Style Arc Melody Tunic, and then I realised that the Burda 6809, which I'd made a few times in cotton fabric could be tweaked to make a similar top.
Continuing my love affair for the Minerva Exclusive Challis fabric I purchased the 'Greenhouse Flower' design. This is absolutely gorgeous. It looks as if someone has painted the flowers and leaves in watercolour paint, and then there is that small 'bleed' of colour on some of the flowers, that you get with watercolour painting.
I wanted a loose sleeve with an elasticated gathered hem, and used the Simplicity one in the photograph. This pattern isn't available any more, but is very similar to New Look 6414.
I used the sleeve head from the Burda pattern to keep the integrity of the pattern and fit, but overlaid the sleeve from the Simplicity when cutting out.
Decided I didn't want the side splits, but opted for a soft curved hem, which I drafted using my French Curve.
The viscose challis was a perfect choice as I wanted a soft, draped effect, rather than structured for the finished garment. I'm also finding that doing buttonholes on this fabric isn't the easiest on my machine, so am avoiding garments with buttons!
Where possible I French seamed throughout. I pre-hemmed the main body pieces before stitching the side seams, and these lined up perfectly.
The 'V' insert in the neck line is a little fiddly, and needs precise marking on the insert and the front body piece. Thank goodness for the Hemline heat erasable marker pens. They give a more precise positioning and don't rub off like tailor's chalk, vital when the stitching line has to be in the correct place.
I'm really pleased with the finished item. The fabric, as always feels lovely against the skin, stitches and presses like a dream. Again, I used the blue tip needles, so no skipped stitches or snagged fabric threads. The thread matching service from Minerva was spot on - Gutermann no.833 was a perfect match.
I had enough material left, so with judicious cutting was able to get a short sleeved T shirt, which was the icing on the cake with this particular project.
