Stripe t-shirts in the summer are something I just love and I wanted to make some new ones, little did I know when ordering this stripe jersey, I would be making three from the same fabric! I ordered 1.5meters of Minerva Core Range Cotton Jersey Stretch Knit Fabric and the color is soft blue. If soft blue is not your color do not worry it comes in 23 other stripe choices.
This spring I purchased a stripe knit top from a retailer and it had a white neckband, I loved the contrast with the stripes and when I purchased this soft blue stripe knit, I knew this is what I wanted to do. I had .5 meters of ribbing from Minerva and is the best ribbing. I am picky about my ribbing, I want recovery and this ribbing has just that.
I had plenty of fabric and I really wanted to compare some t-shirt patterns and what a perfect way to do that with the same fabric. For reference, in the collage photo, the left is Basic Instinct t-shirt, middle is Union St. Tee and right is Tyra Tee. I started with my go-to pattern, the Union St. Tee by Hey June. I love this crewneck and made it in a medium with some adjustments, tapering at the waist and hips for a slimmer fit. I did make the short sleeve version but if you make the long sleeve, please note the sleeves run so slim. Not only do I love to wear a t-shirt in the summer, I love to make them in the summer. They are so quick to make and my sewing time in the summer is very limited.
For my second t-shirt, I went with Just Patterns Tyra Tee, a very boxy tee. Boxy tees are on trend and with this jersey is soft and has some drape, perfect for this pattern. Tyra tee is oversized, dropped shoulders and just a bit of waist shaping. The sizes are 34-60, I went with a 38. Once again, another pattern, which goes together quickly. For reference, this t-shirt is the photo I am leaning against the chair.
Lastly, I asked for recommendations, Basic InstincT-shirt by Sasha Secondo Piano, I went with a large, this gives a fit just between Union St. Tee and the Tyra Tee. Only one problem, I did not have enough fabric for the sleeves! I thought about it and I did have enough for maybe a ruffle type sleeves, but that was not the look I was going for. The armscyes are a bit deep so needed something to pull it up. Ribbing was my answer and know I have a sleeveless t-shirt for the hot summer days. That will be most days for us, summer came early and came hot and dry.
I love this fabric it sews beautifully and feels amazing. It is just such a good knit fabric and perfect for t-shirts, dresses, and other knit patterns. It is 95% cotton and 5% lycra with 45% width stretch and 50% length stretch. The width is 150 cm wide (59 inches). I enjoyed making these three t-shirts and seeing the differences and what I like. I did not narrow it down to one pattern, just all three but all three have different looks and now I know which one to go with for the certain look I am wanting.
