Hello Makers!
I’m starting to dip my toes in the arena of lingerie sewing. This is a brave, new world for me but I’m excited.
When I got married, the tradition at the time was to have a personal shower before your wedding, the bridesmaids and close friends would buy lingerie for you. I wasn’t really into that idea, I found it awkward shopping for such things for others, but a friend bought me a beautiful set anyway. It was thoughtful of her and, honestly, I wouldn’t have had anything if she hadn’t. It just wasn’t a priority for me.
As thoughtful as it was, the robe she bought me barely reached the bottom of my butt. It highlighted once again why shopping has always been a frustrating endeavor for me. I realize that the point of such garments it to be revealing but it just wasn’t a flattering place for a robe to fall on my figure. I held onto the robe for years but eventually let it go because I never wore it. It didn’t look good and it wasn’t possible it even wear it to grab coffee in the morning in common spaces. It was so short it wasn’t appropriate anywhere but the bedroom. I rarely buy any of these types of clothes because they rarely fit well. When I saw this fabric, I envisioned a beautiful robe that actually fit.
The fabric arrived and it was better than I imagined. It washed and dried amazing and had such lush, vibrant color.
I used Simplicity pattern 8800 for the robe. I made a size medium and if I made it again I’d size up to a large. Usually, I like a little more to wrap around me than this pattern provided. I’ve made many robes and mediums are usually plenty big enough. Other than that, the pattern was easy to use and assemble. I did the carriers for the tie a little different than instructed. I hid them in the side seam instead of top stitching them on the sides of the robe. I did this because I felt like the edges of the fabric showing just wasn’t a finished look I’d like, even if I serged the edges.
I can’t stop smiling at the finished product. I love the robe and I think it’s beyond beautiful. The fabric feels amazing and the vibrant pops of color are so pretty and eye catching.
I think my next step is to make some custom garments for underneath. It’s so empowering to make your own, custom fitting lingerie.
I have a little leftover from this project and I’m going to play around with different lingerie patterns and see if I can conquer this new area of sewing. If I come up with anything cute from the scraps I’ll post them for you to see!
Have you ever tried lingerie sewing? What are your favorite patterns? Any tutorials you’d recommend?
Happy Sewing!
