Pattern Description: McCalls 2255 (OOP from 1999)
Easy fitting bias skirt has elasticized waist, optional side slit and overskirt variations; skirt B or E has optional lace trim at lower edge.
Pattern Sizing: 6-22. I made a size 10.
Were the instructions easy to follow? I have sewn this pattern once before and I did my own thing so I didn't look at the instructions beyond the diagram for laying out the pieces on fabric.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: I like that this is an elastic waist bias cut skirt.
Dislikes: It was hard to know how much to shorten the pattern to suit me. but that's not the fault of the pattern.
Fabric Used: Minerva Exclusive Bubble Shoal Silk Charmeuse Satin (2.5m)
This silk is incredible. The colors are vibrant and did not fade with prewashing or drying. The hand is incredibly soft. If you hold the fabric up to the light it is ever so slightly sheer but because of the print nothing shows through. I am not wearing a slip in the pictures.
Changes/alterations: I did French seams on the sides. I used 2" elastic instead of the 1/2" elastic that was called for.
before cutting out, i shortened 3 inches above the knee and another 3 inches below the knee. that was not enough to make it ankle length, so after letting the skirt hang for a week i cut another 2.5" (roughly) off the bottom. i finished with a 5/8" narrow hem.
I added one of the Minerva tags to the CB waist because it's very hard to distinguish the back from the front.
Would you sew it again? I love bias cut slip skirts and this one is comfy with the elastic waist so i would sew it a third time. i would shorten the pattern another 2.5" before cutting out because it's very tricky to try to even out a hem and shorten it at the same time.
Conclusion: I knew that this simple design would let the gorgeous fabric shine. it's so beautiful and i love it!
