Faux leather pants are a trend I have been eyeing for quite some time now. I love the edginess it adds to a look and it’s something I’ve been craving to switch things up a bit with my styling. I did my usual scroll on Pinterest for inspo and I came across these faux leather joggers that were so cute. The front and back leg were two pieces, with a seam that ran across the knee which I thought was a nice subtle detail. I found the perfect stretch faux leather on Minerva and I got to work.

Before I get into the pattern I have to take a moment to share some of my favorite things about this fabric. I don’t have any experience really with working with leather so I was a bit nervous. From my research, a common tip shared is to work with clips instead of pins as pins will perforate the fabric and create tiny holes. Your machine needle will do the same so it’s important to take your time when stitching. This gave me the impression that I need to avoid having to unpick my stitches at all cost but that honestly wasn’t the case with this fabric. In fact, I was impressed with how it recovered when I had to unpick a stitch (because there were many times lol). I loved that the leather had just the right amount of sheen that wasn’t too shiny and the back of the fabric has a velvet like texture that feels so nice against my skin.

I self-drafted the pattern which I still can’t believe considering how afraid I once was to actually make pants. Just as the inspo picture, I made a seam that ran across the front and back knee area, making the front and back leg patterns consist of two pieces. I added deep slant pockets and buttonholes in the waistband to accommodate a drawstring. When I initially sewed up the pants, the pant legs were longer and went past my ankle. I wasn’t sold on the look and thought something about it was off. I then decided to crop the pants by removing a few inches from the length. I liked this look a bit more but something was still missing. I didn’t figure it out until months later in a recent conversation with my sister where she pointed out that I could taper the leg a bit more and that did the trick. Now I love these pants!

With the velvety softness of the fabric interior and jogger fit, I basically created secret pajamas. I would wear these to the office or when working from home. It’s just that comfortable. I styled these pants with my Claudia Tank by Just Patterns (blog post on www.createandpray.com) and my linen blazer made with fabric from Minerva (blog post on my Minerva blog). This look came together effortlessly and that has always been the goal.

Until my next make!
