Pattern Description: The Protea Pant is a modern trouser with chic front pleats, sweeping pant legs, and a curved waistband. It offers two ways of sewing the waistband. The first way is better for light-to midweight fabrics, and if you like the look of topstitching. The second method is for mid-to heavyweight fabrics, or if you like a clean, more traditional trouser waistband. View A has pleats in front, View B has a flat front.
Pattern Sizing: 00-30. I made the pleated front in size 4 waist, grading to a size 2 hip.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, though pay attention to the step numbering because the layout of the page confused me a bit and i sewed some steps out of order until i realized that the steps are numbered.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: I love how the pattern offers both flat front and pleated front.
Dislikes: I wish that the back had some detail--welt pockets or pocket flaps instead of just being plain.
Fabric Used: Minerva Core Range Wool Touch Stretch Woven Suiting Fabric Taupe Grey. I was pleasantly surprised by this fabric. it has a really nice weight and drape to it. Because it is synthetic, I made sure to use a steam iron with a press cloth and my clapper. Using that pressing method holds a crease nicely. The good thing about poly is that it doesn't really need to be ironed. i've worn the pants twice without pressing them and i think they look fine. These trousers will be great for the colder seasons since they are a bit heavier.
I also used a scrap of grey lining fabric from my stash for the pocket bags.
Changes/alterations: I had sewed this pattern once before in the flat front version. based on those pants, i further altered my pattern, taking 1/2" out of the front waistband tapering to nothing at the hip level.
I also closed it with a hook and bar and hidden button instead of doing a normal button.
Would you sew it again? I wasn't sure I would like the pleated view because i thought it might be too voluminous but i actually quite like them in this heavy drapey fabric. i would sew both views again for year-round use. i would love to make another pleated pair in white linen for summer.
Conclusion: These pants will definitely be an office staple in the fall/winter and they can be styled more casually as well. The fabric is a nice alternative to wool suiting and it's much easier to care for as well.
