As soon as I received this fabric I was in love with the color and the feel. The backing is soft and the texture of the faux leather is amazing. My deep love for it was fleeting, however, because the washing process soured the love. I followed the directions to wash and hang dry. But it wouldn’t dry. It really held the water and was taking forever to dry, so long in fact that I felt like it was getting smelly. I felt pretty defeated and wasn’t sure how to proceed. I wasn’t going to be able to sew on something that smelled like that. At this point, I didn’t have anything to lose so I washed and dried it on low. To my surprise, it came out perfect! Once again, the fabric and I were in love once more. Once again, our love was short lived. I had the fabric neatly folded but when I went to cut it out I couldn’t because the creases from folding it were too aggressive and would have affected the fit.
I took a skirt hanger and hung the fabric in my closet the way that velvets are usually displayed in the store and waited until the creases had hung out.
At this point, I felt a little defeated and intimidated by the fabric, but stay with me because this relationship does have a happy ending.
Keechiibstyle on Instagram has released her first indie pattern and needed testers. When I saw the pattern I knew it was meant for this fabric and I was not wrong.
First of all, cutting this fabric was like cutting butter, so easy and a dream. And I was afraid of it sticking when sewing but I had zero problems using a walking foot. The only concern is that the stitching does scar the fabric so there aren’t room for errors. I top stitched something wrong and just had to go with it, it looked good but the pattern called for a slightly different placement. In other fabrics, I would have ripped the stitches out, but with this one it was a “make it work” moment.
In the end, all the struggle was worth it and I have the most amazing and fierce looking dress. I’ve admired Marica’s style for years and it was fun to have a piece of her amazing fashion sense in my closet.
I also loved that I got to knock two items off my sewing bucket list, faux leather and boning. I hadn’t worked with either before and I was intimidated by both. My fear and trepidation were for nothing, both were great to work with and I am already done with my second version of this dress. I highly recommend the pattern, the construction was great and I even recommend the fabric. Aside from the rough beginning, it was great to sew on and I’m excited to turn my scraps from this project into a cute “everywhere belt” purse that’s so popular and trending right now.
