I’m really, really happy with this skirt!! The wool element in the fabric is such a nice touch and something I really enjoy. The fabric is so special to work with, I highly recommend it! It’s smooth, warm, and so lovely to wear. It’s the kind of fabric that really elevates a pattern, like the Utu skirt.

The fabric, being 100% wool, is a hand wash item. For me, this is not a big deal (and worth it to be able to wear wool). I find wool breaths and wears really well. I don’t need to wash it as often and I will air it out before putting it back in my closet, after wear.

Some extra tips with time and sewing:

Before you stop sewing (in your sewing session, however large or small of a session) write down the next steps you have to do. I did this on a yellow lined post-it note. I tend to sew in small amounts of time, here and there (and those small moments add up). Adding this step saved me a lot of time as I didn’t have to spend time in the beginning of the next sewing session thinking about where I was in the sewing process. This was especially helpful as I changed the length of the hem, I had to do the steps out of order (and had to think through this modification).

Take notes… I find when I take notes on a project, it helps me both with the current project and also if I want to sew the same project again in the future. It was also handy with multiple pattern pieces (including cutting out the outer, lining, and interfacing pieces) to keep track of what I needed to cut, what I already cut, and how I was going to approach the pattern differently to add the lining.

The pattern recommends sewing the Facing and Front pieces wrong sides together before turning it right side out. I sewed the ⅜” seam, snipped off the corners, and then serged this seam (to finish). Snipping off the corners before serging the seam helps to not snip into a serged seam and you’re still getting the benefit of reducing bulk (by removing the corners) before turning this seam right side out.
