Hi friends,
a classic pair of full length black trousers is something that my wardrobe is lacking, and so I did something about it!
Keep reading because these are pretty great because... drumroll... they are pyjamas!!! Well, a pyjama trouser pattern anyway 😄
I get my inspiration for what I want to sew in all sorts of places and situations and a few weeks ago I saw a lady walking down the street in a fabulous pair of loose fitting black trousers. She looked so lovely, I loved how she wore them with a simple white t-shirt,denim jacket and trainers.
That was it, and the seed was sown for my next make for Minerva.
After a rummage through my pattern collection, I couldn't find exactly the right style of pattern I wanted a fairly loose fitting leg - but not as wide as the wide leg trousers that I already had patterns for.
The answer was staring me in the face at bedtime when I noticed that my pyjama trousers were exactly the fit/style of the trouser pattern that I wanted! Any basic pyjama trouser pattern would give you this result, but I used the Margot Pyjama pattern (with a couple of additions mentioned below) from the sewing book 'Love at First Stitch' by Tilly Walnes.
Let's talk about the fabric. I used a black polyester crepe which I will list below this post. It has a very subtle ribbed detail which you can only notice when you are close up, but if you take a look at the fabric on the Minerva listing below and keep scrolling down on that listing you will find some close up shots of the fabric.
The basic pyjama pattern is VERY simple and quick to sew, and I made a couple of small adjustments. Firstly I used elastic to make an enclosed elastic waist. (The original pattern uses a drawstring), but I just wanted to be able to pull these on and off without any fuss. I do however like the look of a belt of sorts, so I added a faux belt tie to the centre front of the waist (just a strip of leftover fabric) and attached by using a vertical line of stitching (see pic above), which I then tied into a knot.
The other alteration that I made on this pattern was to add pockets. Essential.
I'm chuffed with the final result - I have a very practical and comfortable pair of trousers that will see me though the cold months, and I'm delighted that I am getting more use out of an old pattern without having to splash out on another.
A huge thank you to Minerva for the lovely fabric as always, and I'll be back again soon,
Kathy x
