I’ve wanted a white Hailey Shirt since it was first designed and also wanted to give a stretch version a go. When I saw this fabric I knew it was time to make one!
The Fabric:
I made this shirt using some really beautiful ivory stretch cotton sateen from Minerva. This colour is less bright than a plain white and without any yellow tones you can sometimes get with ivory shades.
The fabric is a cotton base with 3% Elastane which gives it that perfect amount of stretch for a semi-fitted shirt. Enough to have it hug where the shirt is fitted, while not so stretchy that it loses any formal-ness to the shirt (like a tshirt material would have).
The cotton sateen has a soft and slightly crisp feeling to it and is nice against the skin. I thought it would have a bit of a sheen to it, based on others photos, but I would say it’s not quite as shiny as the pictures make out. That didn’t turn out to be a problem, it’s a beautiful fabric, but I thought it was worth mentioning. It could also be due to it being Ivory, whereas other colours might come across slightly more sateen-y. :)
The Details:
The fabric has such little stretch that I didn’t deviate from any of the original sewing instructions (apart from the size which I talk about below). If I’d used a fabric with any extra stretch I probably would have reinforced the buttonholes with a second layer of interfacing, but everything worked out great. It’s a very comfortable shirt, and in the ivory (as long as I don’t go spilling someone on it immediately) should let me wear it with quite a wide selection of skirts and trousers, letting them show off their prints or design features while Hailey just quietly brings it all together :)
The Pattern:
The Hailey Shirt was designed to be a comfortable version of a typical shirt and because of this has quite a bit of ease built in. I wanted to see if I could use a stretch fabric and size down a bit to get a more fitted version.
Adjustments: I ended up choosing to go down one full size for the bodice and sleeves. I probably could have gone down another half or full size for the hips but I really hate when it’s too tight there so I erred on the side of caution.
Hailey has four sleeve options, but with the style I was going for, the ¾ sleeves, rolled a couple of times was the option I chose.
I also chose to include both the front and back darts (optional in the pattern) for more body shaping. Between the stretch of the fabric, the downsizing, and the darts it fits exactly how I was hoping for!
