You know that saying, this took forever? Well, this simple shirt did just that and all my own doing. I received this beautiful stripe knit jersey and for several days I just kept thinking what I wanted to make. I knew it would be some sort of top but I wasn’t sure which one.
I went through my patterns, knowing I wanted something a bit different than standard t-shirt. This red jersey knit is just so good, the weight is so good, stripes straight on grain, and the colors are great for summer. I have seen Simplicity 8950 on Instagram and went with this pattern. I loved the front ruching and thought it was a great detail. Well, you are saying, wait Lori, where is the ruching? Yes, I changed my mind. My fabric just didn’t gather the best and as I kept working on distributing the gathers. No matter how much as I worked and tried, it just wasn’t what I wanted.
What took so long? Well, I did cut the fabric in a single layer so I could match the front stripes. Adding some length to the top. Next it took four times to match the center front stripes, which if you look at the close up photo, that did work well even if it took four times! I did stitch the front channels to insert the ribbon for the ruching. After completing the shirt, I did not like this at all. This decision meant to unsew the channels and remove the ribbon. It is a great boxy t-shirt and with the front seam makes the v-neck band an easy sew. That center front seam helps to line up that v-neck perfectly.
I didn’t want a long sleeve version, so I just measured a bit and figured out what length I wanted. I love this drop shoulder detail and how the sleeve works out for the length and look.
Sometimes the road to a finished garment is quite winding and not all the time it turns out like you want. This time it did work out perfectly. I love my boxy, stripe, v-neck shirt. I do laugh a bit how long it took me to make this and how much I used my seam ripper. One thing about all my unsewing, the fabric held up and didn’t stretch out of shape one bit.
I do plan on making this pattern again and using the ruching. It really is such a versatile pattern, several different looks. My suggestion is to try out a small sample with ruching, try to gather it and see how it looks. If I had thought of that before then I would have saved myself some time. Sitting here wearing my new shirt, I keep looking at it and thinking how much I do like it. This fabric does come in two more colors – black and white in addition to navy and white. The fabric content is 95% cotton and 5% lycra another plus for this beautiful fabric. If you need a great knit for your favorite t-shirt, take a look at this one
