Another dashing Dashwood

Well folks, I’m at it again - living vicariously through my offspring. When it comes to fabric, I’ve come to learn that what I love is not always what suits me. I know you should wear whatever the heck you like, but when it doesn’t feel ‘right’ on, and is constantly passed over when getting dressed of a morning, it seems like a shame to spend so much time making something that won’t be worn.

That said, the idea that I would never sew with pretty fabrics in warm tones ever again is severely irksome! So I’m very grateful my children are still at an age where I can choose pretty and fun fabrics to make them gorgeous little outfits. They are also ridiculously happy with every make - kids make the best sewing customers!

So, with this in mind, I chose this beautiful Dashwood cotton which I knew my daughter would love (and I would love to sew with!). This fabric is amazing quality - it has a really good weight to it, so it drapes beautifully, having more body than your average cotton.

The pattern is a lovely little McCall’s number (and that number is M7558!) with some great details and finishes. I especially liked the way the back button placket was finished. I accidentally made the skirt section of the placket too long, but in the end I like how this looks with the extra button added. The ruffle at the sleeve absolutely makes this pattern, and the way it is finished is, for a kid's pattern, really smart - the bodice is fully lined, and the ruffle sandwiched between the two during construction.

The fabric 100% elevated this make into something I think my daughter will want to wear for years. Lucky that, because I made a size two years too big for her (I’m very much into growing room). It does look a little on the large side at the moment, but it will still work for this summer - the trend is currently BUFFET and the length is just right. I think she could get many years out of it, because the top could easily become a tunic as she gets older.

The print is just perfection - at first I was loathe to cut into it, but now it’s made up I cannot stop looking at those pretty little ruffles and letting out a little sigh of satisfaction.

This is the second Dashwood I’ve sewn with and I am hooked - now to find a print in my own colour palate so I can have a few beautiful ruffles of my own!

Thanks for reading,

Ruth
