I wanted this dinosaur jersey knit from Art Gallery Fabrics the second I saw it. It’s the inner child in me, because who doesn’t love dinosaurs? I wasn’t exactly sure what I would make with it, but after the success of my last make, I decided to make another knit jumpsuit. After all, I’m still living in comfy everything and a knit jumpsuit fits the bill perfectly. This time, I decided to make the shorts version of the Nova Jumpsuit by True Bias and I’m fully envisioning wearing this to Disney’s Animal Kingdom the next time we are able to go.
If you’re new to knits, I have to recommend Art Gallery knits once again. I absolutely love knits from Art Gallery and forget how much I love a good knit until I go back to Art Gallery. Even though I sew with wovens more often, I enjoy challenging myself with knit projects and find sewing with knits to be quite satisfying. They usually come together pretty quickly and I find knit projects to be a really great way to get back into sewing if it’s been awhile. Art Gallery knits are probably my favorite, because they are super soft, easy to sew with, wash up well, and have a great weight. I love that I don’t have to worry about any sheerness no matter what color I’m using.
This dinosaur fabric is part of the Esoterra collection which has a lot of great prints. This print in particular has a gray background, which leans toward green, and I could see it being great for all kinds of garments.
For this version of the jumpsuit, I decided to make size 0 with size 4 elastic for the waist once again. I didn’t have to shorten it this time, but I did take out 1 inch from both the front and back straps before cutting. As I was sewing it though, I am pretty sure I sewed a bit more than the intended ⅜ inch seam allowance which makes the armscye a tiny bit higher than I like. At this point though, I’m just going to live with it and make notes for next time.
As with my first Nova Jumpsuit, I found the fiddliest part of this make to be connecting and finishing the straps. You can hand sew it close for a cleaner finish, but I avoid hand sewing as much as possible so I machine stitched it instead. It’s not as clean as it could be, but it was good enough for me. If you’re making this jumpsuit, keep in mind that fiddly part and look to the sew along on the True Bias blog if you need any further help.
I discussed sewing with knits in my Instagram stories whilst making this jumpsuit. I saved everything in my Highlights for anyone to refer back to, but I wanted to point out that this pattern can be made entirely on a regular sewing machine. There are parts where you can optionally use a serger, but you will want to use a regular sewing machine on the stretch stitch setting the majority of the time. If not having a serger is holding you back, you don’t have to worry about it with this pattern and can definitely dive in with what you already have.
