An unexpected triumph – that's what I'll call this cardigan. Why? I’ll tell you in this post.
I got this wool blend textured knit fabric from Minerva and it was much heavier than I expected. It does say on product listing, that this fabric is heavy, but somehow, I thought it wouldn’t be. My initial plan was to sew Carlsbad Cardigan from Itch to Stitch book “Sew Beautiful”. Then I thought maybe Calgary cardigan by New Horizons will be perfect. Before I had a chance to print it out, I happened upon Ottobre 5/2018 magazine and saw the cardigan on the cover photo. It looked so comfy, but a bit too slouchy for my taste.
I looked at the line drawing of the pattern and I really liked what I saw – only sleeves, back and front to cut out. The hood and the side front are cut in one piece (or actually two pieces as you need one for each side). The pattern required 185 cm of fabric, but I made it work with 160 cm that I had. I think this knit fabric is actually wider than 140-145 cm. I’m so happy that I got it cut out and I have a big piece left – I can use it as a top back if I find suitable fabrics to combine it with.
The textured knit fabric has two different sides – grey one is a bit rough against skin, but it looks really good. Inside is black and it’s much softer, but it tends to have like scratched places. I guess the material is more easily damaged. Also, there are grey wool threads visible on the black side, but don’t worry – these don’t stick to your clothes! At least my black top was clean after I took of my cardigan. This knit fabric has four way stretch, but it’s not too soft and it actually holds its form really nicely.
I love the way the cardigan pattern meant for slouchy merino wool fabric works with this quite sturdy knit fabric. My cardigan is so warm and looks so great on me. I didn’t add the self-fabric belt, I thought that if I want to use it with a belt, I have several narrow leather belts that would work with it. For my photos I used a brooch that has scissors on them. It holds the fronts together well and I think I’ll keep on using it to close my cardigan. Little something extra that works great on the grey background.
So that’s the reason why I call it unexpected triumph – I hoped that it will turn out good, but it turned out even better!
Now I have several summer fabrics waiting to be sewn and my mind is overflown with ideas. If only I had more sewing time... 😀
