Hello everyone, as a novice sewing, I am so thrilled to show you my first completed project with the Minerva team. This is my first dress made, but not my first make with Minerva fabrics. Back in 2018 when I attended night classes to learn how to sew so I could make my Tardis dress, which can be seen further down my profile.

Today I am sharing the New Look patterned dress I made from the Rose & Hubble range of Cotton Poplin fabrics. I adore current range of print from the contrasting black and white colours on the Arctic print to the added pop of blue in the Urban print to the Jungle print which I used for my dress.

With dark shades of green and a hint of brown, I knew this dress would suit all seasons, especially as it is earth colours. As we are currently in winter, it is perfect with leggings, undervest and boots. The whole entire just works.

I used a pattern template from New Look K6125. The pattern sizes go up to 22 and is free-flowing from the chest and covers areas that I am less than comfortable with making it a good stable dress pattern. This design has the added bonus of pockets templates. No more excuses for not adding pockets to anymore makes. While the pockets do appear simple enough, there is a knack to creating the perfect curves and is something I am still working on.

Who does not love a dress with pockets?

The design calls for two darts to be added to both the dress and the lining and a hidden zip at the back. Hidden zips are another technique which you will get better at the more you try so never shy away from these. After watching celebrity Sewing Bee Christmas 2020, I can fully relate to wanting to add Velcro rather than a zip, but if we don’t keep trying, we’ll never be experts at hidden zips.

As cotton poplin is a thin fabric my dress also has been lined. I did not use greens or browns for this, although I do feel it would have looked that be smarter if I had. I used my black lining which also works but also means my dress can be worn comfortably through winter.

With all new makes now, I have been making matching face coverings with the remnants.
