I haven’t been as motivated lately to sew, but the idea of this outfit gave me all the feels and I couldn’t wait to complete it. Matching separates have quickly become one of my most favorite things to make. I love that it helps me use up any leftover fabric I have on hand while also offering plenty of options for wear. As much as I love a jumpsuit/one piece look, I admit I don’t wear them as often because they don’t fit in well for my day to day. With separates, I can mix and match a faux one piece one day and then change it up for more practicality the next.
Halloween is one of my absolute favorite holidays so I love a festive look that doubles for every day. When I saw this Art Gallery print, I knew I had to have it. It has brooms on it and was originally designed for the Halloween season, but I thought it would be subtle enough for year round. I’d like to say I was right that it doesn’t give off immediate Halloween vibes especially since my husband couldn’t tell they were brooms until I told him.
For my top, I made the Ashton Top from Helen’s Closet. This pattern has been on my list since its release and I was excited to finally make it. The pattern was very well written and quick to make. I made a size 6 in view b, which is the cropped version. I also opted for the bias finishing for the neck and armholes instead of the facing finishing. Both options are included in the pattern. Although I think the sizing is great without any modifications, next time I would opt to do a small bust adjustment to eliminate/reduce the bust darts and add an inch to the length. Though I think the cropped look is cute, it’s slightly too short for my preference and I don’t love the billowy-ness of the darts for my petite frame. It’s all personally preference though so if you are short on time to make adjustments, the straight 6 was a good option for me.
For my skirt, I decided to make another pattern that’s been on my list since its release: the Pocket Skirt from Peppermint Magazine and Paper Theory. This free pattern has the giant pockets that I’ve been dreaming of and was such a fun and quick make. I was puzzled at first to see how the pattern pieces would fit together, but it quickly became clear once I got started. I love the clever construction and well written instructions. I already have another one cut out and ready to go. As far as sizing goes, I made a 6 based off my hip measurement and shortened it by 3 inches. Even though my waist is a couple of sizes larger than my hips, it was easy to adjust for that in the elastic.
For anyone interested in either of these patterns, I would highly recommend them. They’re great for all levels and would work perfectly for any woven fabrics in your stash. Have you made either pattern yet?
