I enjoy joining my husband for a refreshing round of golf, and we found ourselves spending a lot more time on the course through the pandemic. Inspired by Whitney’s @TomKatStitchery recent athletic module, I decided to add a long-sleeve Pacific Pullover to my growing capsule of me-made golf wear.

I had never worked with pique before, which I learned is moisture-wicking and often used for polo shirts. I loved that it was 100% organic and knew it would be a great addition to my athletic collection. When I received the knit fabric I was surprised to learn (although perhaps I shouldn’t have been) that it didn’t have much stretch. The Pacific Pullover is designed for 50%, four way stretch, but I decided to proceed in making the pullover, adjusting by taking smaller seam allowances to compensate for the additional give I would likely need when losing the stretch required of this pattern.

Having seen other athletic pullovers on Pinterest that were monogrammed, I asked a sewing friend if she would be willing to embroider my monogram on my new Pacific Pullover. Thankfully I had already made this pattern so I was able to try on my finished garment and together we decided where to best position my monogram on the new pullover. However, having four initials and such a small space to work with, we decided it best to simply use my first initial. Before taking my pullover to her to be monogrammed, I cut out all the pattern pieces I would need and completed the first pattern step of sewing together the front and two side panels. Leaving the front detached from the back pattern piece allowed my friend more work space to add my first initial, and having the side panels in place helped her know the final amount of space she had to work with (meaning my front pattern piece, minus the seam allowances). I also took my extra scrap fabric to her so she would be able to practice before embroidering on the final garment.

Assembling the rest of the pullover was quick and easy. Having made the pattern before, I knew I wanted to try hand-stitching the interior collar down, which I found to be a really nice alternative to the twill tape called for in the pattern. It was a bit tight to get the full collar sewn down without any bubbling so I draped the garment, inside out, over my dress form and found that helpful when pinning the collar to the body of the garment. If making the Pacific Pullover out of pique again, I might interface the collar so it would have more body and the ability to be styled standing up as well as folded down.

One additional adjustment I made to this pattern, due to my choice of fabric, was extending the cuff and hem bands to the width of the sleeves and body. The original cuff and hem band pattern pieces are slightly smaller than the sleeves and body, offering a fitted, athletic style. However, without the stretch and recovery intended for this pattern I thought it was important to match the lengths and not get potential gathering.

Although I like the finish of the zipper insert, my only critique of this pattern is that it is a bit vague about where to place the zipper to sew it in along the bottom. I did a bit of measuring, a bit of picking, but am really happy with my final result. This light pullover will make a wonderful layering piece for Spring, Fall, and even evening golf in the year ahead. And I love wearing it because it makes me think of my sewing friend, who also enjoys golf. We’ll see you out on the greens 2021!
