I don’t know about you, but I live in t-shirts. I wear knit tops almost all the time and t-shirts especially are a huge staple in my wardrobe. When I started sewing, t-shirts were high on my wish list, but I had a hard time working with knits and didn’t find many sewing patterns I loved. As my handmade wardrobe grew and I developed my skills further, I started challenging myself with more knits and mindfully choosing what new pieces I was going to add to my wardrobe. I decided I needed to make more knits, because that’s what I wear a lot of and that’s how this simple black tee came to be.
Black is a huge staple in my wardrobe. It’s my go to fabric color as you can probably tell from my last few makes because of its versatility. It’s great for dressing up or down and goes with everything. When I saw this knit fabric from Minerva, I knew it would be the perfect fabric for a t-shirt and couldn’t wait to finally add more tees to my wardrobe. The color black doesn’t always photograph well so it’s hard to see here, but this fabric was perfect for what I had in mind. If you’re new to knit fabrics, I would definitely recommend this fabric for you. It’s a true black color that is very easy to work. It doesn’t shift much when cutting or sewing, has just enough stretch without being too hard to handle, and would be a great way to enter the world of knit fabrics. It reminds me of the t-shirt fabric I see most often in classic t-shirts, because of it’s thicker weight and opaqueness. I can see this working so well for many projects.
I used the Elliot Sweater/Tee pattern from Helen’s Closet for this t-shirt. I’m a huge fan of Helen’s patterns and this pattern lives up to the standards I’ve come to expect. There are a ton of different variations you can make with this pattern, but I decided to stick with view b which is the classic raglan style tee. The instructions were thorough, the fabric sewed nicely, and it was a pretty quick make.
For sizing, I didn’t have to make any changes and sewed a straight size 4/6 based on my 32 inch high bust. I often have to shorten patterns for my 5 foot height, but I didn’t here. I tend to prefer longer tops and the final length of this top fits perfectly. I paired it with leggings here, but I’ve worn this top with everything from culottes and pinafores to jeans and joggers.
This new tee fits into my wardrobe so well. I can wear it with just about anything and I love how comfortable it is to wear. The fabric has held up nicely wash after wash and I can definitely see this being worn for many years to come.
What’s your favorite t-shirt pattern? I’d to make more tees!
