Every year Christmas just sneaks upon me. Seems like there’s always enough time to make gifts, sew table linens and gift bags. But no! When you think you have everything handled, you discover there’s no (clean!) table cloth to put on the table. Fortunately, this year there will be!
Minerva has this really cute and Christmassy cotton broadcloth fabric, that suits so well to be a table linen. It has these adorable silver and shiny deers on the white background. You can pair it with every color tableware and cutlery. This hint of sparkle is so pretty. I admire its print: it’s subtle but not boring, interesting for children but not childish, shiny and sparkling but not cheap.
The fabric is 110 cm / 43.3 inches wide, so I needed to sew some boarders for it to fit my 90 cm wide dining table properly. I like that the cloth is over each edge long enough, but not on everybody’s lap while sitting. I think 15-20 cm on each side is just right. I just sewed the strips of the same fabric on the both sides. All the seam allowances are hidden inside the seam.
Usually at the Christmas, we have another table next to this one, so the table cloth is shorter on the ends of the table. We needed to seat 10-15 people, but this year it will be only four of us. We will be making video calls and I still want to décor and make beautiful table for us to take seat behind and eat our Christmas meal.
This fabric is 100% cotton so after a good meal you can easily throw it into your washing machine and get all the stains out. Just know that cotton can shrink up to 10-15 % in washing as it is natural fiber. I prewashed my fabric, so I’m not worried that my cloth will be too short after that.
As I set my table for the photo shoot, my children came and asked, if somebody is coming to visit us. They really liked our blue and white set of tableware. I think I need to make more of these table linen and set the table so they could enjoy eating in this festive time. If you can’t visit all the fancy restaurants, you can still bring these home! 😀
What did or do you sew for you home for Christmas? I haven’t shown my fabric gift bags yet – these will be soon here too! I had to hide them from my boys, Santa hasn’t visited us yet 😉
