This beautifully striped scuba knit, with its soft pale pink mixed in with the cream and blacks, was absolutely breathtaking to me. When I saw the fabric online, I knew I had to have it but at the time, I wasn't exactly sure what to do with it. But I had to have it. Are you a "buy it now and find a project for it later" type shopper? Well then you understand. When I finally received it from Minerva, I had an immediate vision pop in my head.
I kept thinking "I do not want to cut this fabric. It's too pretty to chop up." The final verdict that would allow the fabric to remain in tact the most?….a maxi length 1/2 circle skirt! A full circle would be too much fabric and make the double knit skirt heavy and I hate having to keep adjusting my skirt.
As you may know, circle skirts require no pattern but it does require some calculation. Using the typical circle skirt formula I went to work. I added pockets (of course) using no real pattern piece here either, because I've made enough side pockets to know the typical shape. The waistband was a result of my waist measurement plus a few inches to allow for an overlap for the hooks and eyes. Which is my least favorite part. I hate those final hand stitching steps. But they are a necessary evil.
As for the hem, hemming circle skirts can cause some heartache for perfectionists. But there are a few ways to tackle the round hem and avoid the grief of a partially wrinkled hem. I chose to use single fold bias tape. Not because it's any easier than any other method, it's just my own preference. I prefer the clean look it provides underneath the hem.
The lace bomber jacket was made with McCalls 7100. I cut the lace out to the XXL size and made no adjustments. The cuff and bottom bands call for a ribbed knit, however I chose a scuba knit fabric for its smooth soft feel and appearance. I felt that it paired better with the lace.
