Each season I seem to be drawn to a certain color and this fall it is mustard, I love this color for fall. So, no surprise when I saw this Mustard Challis, I knew I needed to make a top with it. Thanks to our wonderful sewing community, I saw New Look 6678 made up and loved it. New Look patterns are such a good price point, which I felt it was a good way to try the square neckline and see if I liked it.
I did make a couple of changes in the pattern, first eliminating the front and back darts. I really didn’t want a close-fitting top, more relaxed and flowy, just perfect for this gorgeous John Kaldor challis. It does come in another colorway, if you are not loving mustard like I am. I washed and dried this gorgeous challis and it was just as gorgeous after as it was before.
Extra time was taken as I cut out this New Look top, challis can be a bit slippery, so I made sure to pin and keep the fabric straight. The construction of this pattern is very straight forward, which is so nice. I was drawn to the pattern for the great design details: square neckline, puffed sleeves, front buttons and great shape. Have you noticed another change in the pattern? Check out the sleeves, not only did I try the square neckline, I tried shirring for a new trend, too. Shirring adds so much detail to the top and it really is quite easy to do. The shape and design of this pattern is perfect for this Minerva Challis, the fabric becomes the statement and the fabric drape is just perfect for the style of the top.
If you are not sure how to do shirring, just search for tutorials online, there are some good ones out there. I did go with five rows of shirring; I tend to like odd numbers. I added an inch the sleeve length, but after completing my garment, this really wasn’t necessary. Some tips for shirring, hand wind the bobbin and do several, you will go through the elastic thread quite quickly.
This New Look top didn’t take long to construct, in fact doing the shirring might have taken the longest. I did find attaching the gathered sleeves to the side neck pieces to be a bit tricky. I used several pins and took my time with distributing the gathers. I like this style so much; I need to take another look at my pattern and change the sleeves to a long sleeve version for winter. Shirring for the cuffs of the elastic will be a must!
