Striped Culottes:
I’m not a huge fan of florals and ditsy prints, although I have a few that I like, however, show me stripes or spots and I’m happy. When I was offered the chance to review this fabric I jumped at it.

This is lightweight cotton. Perfect for shirt, blouses and summer weight garments. Super hot day - this is the perfect fabric. I don’t think I really did this fabric justice with my pattern choice and I think I’d have gone for a simple dirndl skirt or a dress in hindsight.

But you live and learn. The pattern I chose really would be better suited to fabrics with more body, and the lightness of this cotton means that the wearability of these culottes will be limited to very warm summer days.

I was inspired by a Boden skirt (should have made a skirt) I loved the ties so decided to add them to the pattern I chose.

I used Burdastyle #126 03/2015. Long culottes with a deep double pleat on the front. The fabric was super easy to cut out. I interfaced the waistband, pocket edges and front fly and waist tie. I should have used slightly firmer interfacing to give structure.

If you have an understanding of the order of construction - these are not difficult to make, Burdstyle instructions are rather brief though! I’m used to having a pocket bag that extends to the centre front, this would have been really helpful in keeping the pleats lying flat, but they were the fold over kind, and nowhere deep enough for pockets in my opinion.

I did wonder what colour thread to use to sew these up. I tried lots of options, but in the end went with an off white, which seemed to be the best fit overall.

The culottes came together well and with no issues. I finished the waist with a hook and bar fastening. Once they were done I added some belt loops and a long tie for the waist. I quite like these, but I wish the fabric was a bit heavier as the additional weight would really help with this design. I have worn these a few times at work - until the weather cooled- and they have had lots of love. They'll definitely be getting some more wear next summer too!

This is a lovely fabric, it’s smooth and cool against the skin, but it is not trouser weight!!!!!! Stick with shirts, tops, summer skirts or dresses and you won’t go wrong.
