I’m Julie from Sun of their Stories and today I’m so happy to be here with a pretty and very easy summer top pattern.
This floaty layered Knitted Fabric is so pretty, I feel in love immediately. It’s a good thing I love it because, being perfectly honest, it was not easy to work with!
I started attempting to make a summer t shirt with it, with a soft draping neckline. This did not go well, the layers of the fabric got caught up in the top facing and I ended up with what can only be described as a hot mess.
However, as I said, I do love this bright fabric and its pretty layers so I was not deterred. I just needed to keep the shapes and seams really simple.
I was going to describe this top as self-drafted but that sounds a little too grand for what actually happened. The top is made from 4 simple rectangles and really couldn’t be much easier to make.
I used a 1cm seam allowance and a slight zigzag stitch throughout. If you have a serger this would be ideal.
You don’t need pattern pieces, you just need to measure yourself and do a tiny bit of easy maths.
Start with your bust measurement, divide it by 2 and then add 4 cm. This is A
So my bust is 92cm, divided by 2 is 46, plus 4 is 50cm.
Then measure from just under your arm pit to the point you want the bottom of the top. This is B.
For me this was 42cm.
Cut 2 pieces of fabric A x B (mine were 50cm x 42cm) The stripes in the fabric going horizontal.
To deal with the layers of this fabric lift the top layer up so you always cut along the underneath layer only. You can see I appear to be using inches here, I work in either (it’s my age!) but although I made my top in inches I have converted it here for the tutorial.
Pin and then sew the side seams using a 1cm seam allowance. You need check, straighten and pin down every single layer of the fabric or it will get folded up on itself as you stitch. (Ask me how I know!!) This is a bit of a pain but totally worth it.
At this point you have made a boob tube that probably won’t stay up! Let’s add something to keep it up and preserve our modesty.
As you can see from the photos here I am pretty pale. I burn to a crisp as easy as anything so in the hot weather I like to keep a bit covered, especially my shoulders. So this top has what are in effect super wide straps that fall over the shoulders and form the tiniest of sleeves.
Cut 2 rectangles of fabric 43cm x 23cm, the stripes running the long length of the pieces. These are your strap/sleeves.
Find the centre of your boob tube on both sides and mark with a pin. With right sides together, pin one short side of the strap/sleeve to the boob tube front from the central pin. It will not go all the way to the side seam, but how much will depend on your size. With my measurements I have a 5cm gap from the edge of the strap/sleeve to the side seam. If you are bigger it will be more, if you are smaller it will be less. You can always adjust the width of the strap/sleeves if you wish.
Repeat for the other strap/sleeve and then turn the top over and repeat on the other side.
This photo of the top inside out shows in pictures what you are doing much better than I can describe.
That’s it! So so easy, I’ve made it sound complicated but it really isn’t!
There is no need to neaten the seams or edges, the soft floaty fabric rolls on itself.
The top is the same, front and back. If the v on either side is too low for you, you can always stitch the v up a little by hand.
It was a breezy day when we took these photos so the strap/sleeve on the left has blown up a little, I didn’t notice until afterwards, sorry. The right side shows how it hangs much better.
The top is so light and airy to wear. It rolls up really small too and is virtually crumple proof, so idea for holidays.
The fabric does snag a little so I won’t be wearing any fancy jewellery with it. The pattern is so bright I don’t think it needs lots of accessories anyway.
I can’t wait to wear it on my holiday this year, I think it’ll be perfect for keeping my shoulders covered whilst sightseeing.
