I’ve had a summery wrap skirt on my mind for awhile now and even got the perfect pattern to make one over a year ago. Alas, I was making everything but the wrap skirt I had sitting in my pattern pile. It wasn’t until I found this beautiful Floral Cotton Lawn Fabric that I finally made it happen. This print isn’t one that I normally gravitate toward so it was a bit of a shock for me to choose and I second guessed it a bunch, but I loved the colors so I decided to give it a try. Seeing how beautiful it was in person was what finally made me decide to make the wrap skirt instead of the dress I was originally going to make. This fabric is so soft and I knew I needed to use it to my advantage. I ultimately decided it was the ideal fabric for the Simplicity 8606 wrap skirt pattern.
I decided to make view D of this skirt with the shorter skirt and flounce. I worried about the right fit with my measurements, but I think it all worked out perfectly. I graded the pattern from my size 14 waist to my size 10 hip. I left the length for size 10 untouched and it hits exactly where I wanted it to at my midcalf. The instructions were pretty straightforward and I really liked how easy it came together. The only thing I did differently was hemming the flounce with my rolled hem foot which helped save some time. One of the features of this skirt that I appreciate is the buttonhole. It’s such a little thing to easily overlook but being able to thread one of the straps through it and around to the front makes this skirt especially easy to tie and wear without slipping.
It’s been awhile since I’ve used a Big 4 pattern and I’m so glad I decided to go with this one. The wrap skirt pattern with this cotton lawn fabric made the perfect pairing and I am so happy with the end result. The print is busier than I am used to, but I love how it makes the skirt look like one continuous piece. Since the skirt is cut into several sections, I worried it would look broken up but that isn’t the case at all and I love that the fabric looks like it floats into the flounce. I also love how delicate the tied bow looks. With such a light colored fabric, I worried about it being too sheer, but that isn’t a problem at all.
If you don’t have a wrap skirt in your wardrobe yet, here’s a reminder of how easy they are to make and how incredibly versatile they are. This skirt is something I know I’ll be wearing throughout the summer with a tank top and even into the transitional months with a light sweatshirt. Made with the right fabric, you can easily make a wrap skirt to fit your needs. I’m excited to wear this skirt as much as I can and can’t wait to try this pattern again with a different fabric.
Have you made a wrap skirt yet? I’d love to see what fabrics you’ve used!
