Hello Minerva readers!

I’m Crystal of Crystalsewsandstuff and I am back to review the beautiful Ice Blue Eyelash Sweater Knit that I used to make a sixties inspired sweater dress.

Inspiration

I have been seeing sixties styles in fashion magazines lately and I knew I wanted to make something in this era that would work for today. When I saw this fabric in the call-out, I immediately thought of the sweater dress featured on the pattern envelope of McCall’s 7993. I love the A-line silhouette of this design and I knew it would work perfectly in this beautiful pastel color.

Construction

This pattern is a straightforward sew with only six pattern pieces for View C. I adjusted the pattern by raising the waistline and shortening the sleeves to accommodate my short waist and arms. I then proceeded to construct the dress per the instruction sheet. In order to make the collar stand-up easily, I decided to add interfacing to the collar piece. However, this worked a little too well and made the fabric excessively stiff for the wide neckline. As a result, I decided to unpick the collar and re-sew it without the interfacing. Unfortunately, the collar then became too loose. I was getting frustrated and then suddenly had a “Make it Work” [a la Tim Gunn of Project Runway] moment and went on a hunt to find a collar piece that would better suit the pattern.

After perusing through my pattern stash, I stumbled upon McCall’s 6796. I love how the collar on this sweater flows down the front and back of the garment so I decided to give it a try. I measured the circumference of the neckline of my dress as well as the width of collar piece. I quickly realized that I needed to add some width to make the collar work. I folded and cut the collar piece in half and added eight inches to the center to make it match the neckline. The collar now fit accurately and was the perfect solution to this collar fiasco!

Styling

I wanted to finish off this look with accessories that would give it a sixties go-go vibe. My favorite white ankle boots certainly bring the feeling of this decade to this dress. Instead of buttons, I opted to add a decorative brooch to the collar to jazz it up a bit. For my hair, I went for a high bun at the crown to add to the retro theme. Of course the look would not be complete without my signature dangly earrings. I love the styling of this era!

Final Thoughts

This sweater knit is both lovely and unique. This icy blue color will help you stand out amongst the sea of grey and brown that is so common this time of year. It is extremely soft and will add a nice layer of warmth to any garment you make. It does shed a little while cutting and sewing, so have a lint brush handy to keep things tidy. Shedding has been minimal after this dress was completed. If you want to add some pizzazz to your winter wardrobe, you should definitely pick up this lovely fabric.
