I was so in love with the previous lacquer print I made for my daughter that I had to make one for myself! I used this lacquer print cotton poplin and dyed it purple using Rit Dye.

I have had this one salwar kameez that was my favorite. It is white with light purple embroidery and silver embroidery at the neck. Ever since I stopped being able to fit it I have wanted to recreate it in some fashion. And this seemed like the perfect opportunity. The plan was to do a very light purple dye to just barely bring out the white lacquer and a darker purple piping.

A salwar kameez, also known as a salwar kurta is a combination of loose trousers (salwar) and a tunic (kameez/kurta). The kameez usually has high slits and is worn with a decorative stole (dupatta).

Pattern Planning

The pattern I used as a base was By Hand London’s Elisalex Dress. I have used this dress bodice multiple times before as a bodice as well as once as a kameez so I knew it would come out nicely. But this time, I wanted to add piping to the princess seams all down the kameez.

To turn a bodice to a tunic style, I extended each piece all the way down to the desired length. The back and front middle pieces were just straight lines down, but the side pieces were extended a bit differently. The side that attached to the middle piece extended as a straight line, and the side seam area was shaped for my waist and hips then slightly flared out down the length.

I ended up making a muslin with a few adjustments to my previous pattern pieces. Mainly, adding height to the armscye and sleeves to give more movement. But also, I found the bodice neckline gaped a bit so I removed a sliver from both the front and back neckline.
