I love a good faux jumpsuit. The versatility of two separate pieces usually wins most days around here and I’m very excited to add another set to my wardrobe. This set features two patterns. Together, they make the most comfortable faux jumpsuit. Separately, they add much appreciated comfy yet stylish staples.
The fabric I used for this project is a rayon challis print from Art Gallery Fabrics. It’s part of the Flower Child collection designed by Maureen Cracknell. I’ve been lusting after this print since it was first released, but never got my hands on it until now. It’s just as pretty in person as I imagined it would be. It can be slightly sheer in the lighter colored parts of the print, but is otherwise opaque and would be ideal for lots of different patterns.
For this top, I made the Ashton Top from Helen’s Closet Patterns. This woven top pattern comes in sizes 0-30 and cup sizes b and d. I’m a huge fan of Helen’s patterns and this top is quickly becoming a staple. It is a pretty simple make, but would be a great base for hacks. Helen shares a lot of great hacking ideas on her blog plus there’s an add-on sleeve expansion available for more variability.
I made a size 6 in view b which is the cropped length. I also made a small bust adjustment which almost eliminated the darts, but not quite. I contemplated removing the darts altogether, but decided to give this mod a try. With this adjustment, I think it works pretty well in this flowy rayon fabric.
As for the length, the cropped length does not need further adjustments for me, but I would probably want to add an inch or so next time around so I could wear this with more than high waisted bottoms. In the cropped length, it doesn’t tuck into anything very well so I would definitely keep that in mind if you wanted a tucked look.
For these bottoms, I went back to an old favorite pattern of mine: the Fernway Culottes from Twig + Tale. I tested for this pattern way back when and it’s still one of my go-to pants patterns. It comes in sizes 0-26 and is currently in the process of expanding its size range up to a size 32.
Rayon fabric is ideal for this pattern when you want something with more drape. I made a size f in the calf length and shortened it by about five inches. I like the swishiness of this fabric and length combo. It could be mistaken for a skirt, but has the convenience of pants. It’s also not as bulky in the back since the fabric can get a bit overwhelming there.
I added my Mindfully Made label to this make as a reminder of the time and attention this make took. I tucked it into the bias binding at the back which was a very easy add. It’s the perfectly finishing touch and I’m very excited to add these staples to my wardrobe.
