I’ve wanted a knit jumpsuit just like this one for so long, but didn’t find the perfect pattern until True Bias released their Nova Jumpsuit. The pattern was exactly what I was looking for so I grabbed a copy of the pattern and naturally sat on it for months which happens way too often around here. It wasn’t until I spotted this beautiful Art Gallery jersey knit fabric that I finally decided to make a Nova Jumpsuit. It was a very pleasant make and I am now calling this my not-so-secret secret pajamas.
First of all, if you’ve never sewn with Art Gallery jersey knit before, what are you waiting for? I admit it’s been awhile for me so the fabric kept pleasantly surprising me throughout with its softness. It’s the softest knit and so easy to sew with that I kept having these moments of excitement over how comfortable the finished make would be. Some knits curl a bit too much to handle, but I never had that problem. I am definitely giving myself a mental note to sew with more of these knits.
This fabric in particular features a subtle print on a very pretty taupe background. I worried the print pattern might be a bit too distracting on this jumpsuit, but I think it worked really well giving it just enough contrast without being overwhelming. The weight of this knit was also a good one for this jumpsuit since it’s opaque, stable, and very comfortable. From the Art Gallery knits I’ve used before, this one definitely lives up to expectations.
For this make, I made version B of the Nova Jumpsuit which is the longer romper with elastic at the waistband and ankles. Because this pattern has a lot of ease, I didn’t feel the need to grade out for my waist like I normally would. Instead, I made a size 0 (based off my bust measurement) and cut waistband elastic for a size 4 which worked out perfectly. I also shortened the legs by 2 inches for my 5 feet height. After almost completing the jumpsuit, I realized the straps were a little looser than I would like so I went back and took 1 inch off the straps of the front bodice. Because the way the straps are assembled, this was the easiest way to adjust after the fact and it definitely fixed the problem.
The next time I make this, I would try taking 1 inch off the straps of both the front and back bodices beforehand and I would consider making the neckline slightly higher for personal preference. Other than that, I would do the same mods I made with sizing and shortening.
It’s been awhile since I’ve made anything new and this make was the perfect one to jump back in. The pattern was well written and illustrated, the photo sew along on the True Bias blog was a great supplement, and I thoroughly enjoyed this sew. The only trouble I had was with finishing off the straps since the method can be a bit tedious especially with a less stable knit, but I made it through and I’m really excited to add this jumpsuit to my wardrobe.
Have you made the Nova Jumpsuit yet? What else have you made with Art Gallery knit?
