Gauze fabric is one of my most favorite fabrics. It has the coolest texture and makes everything instantly cozier. It’s often used for baby blankets and has been among my kids’ favorite baby blankets for years. It tends to soften with each wash which makes it super comfy. If you’ve never made a garment with gauze before, its looser weave is ideal for summery makes like skirts and tops and I personally love it for looser fitting garments. It is definitely a fabric I would categorize under secret pajama fabric!
This crinkle cotton gauze from Minerva comes in a variety of different colors and I always have a hard time choosing among the amazing solid options. Ultimately, I went with my tried and true favorite color: black, To me, a neutral color is always elevated with textured fabric like this crinkly gauze and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on t his fabric. When I had it in hand, it did not disappoint. It is super soft and feels amazing. I knew it was going to be the perfect fabric for the Ruffle Sleeve Top pattern from In the Folds for Peppermint Magazine. I couldn’t wait to use this freebie pattern to showcase the beautiful texture of this crinkle gauze.
For this top, I made a size C with a few modifications. First, I made a 1” small bust adjustment which ended up removing the bust dart. I don’t make this adjustment often, but when I do, I always love the end result. For most cases, bust darts in looser fitting garments are unnecessary for me so this was a good pattern to try this adjustment on. If you’ve never made this adjustment before, it’s a very simple one that I’d highly recommend you take a look at. For those needing regular SBAs, this is definitely a skill you will want in your arsenal. There’s a small learning curve, but it’s totally worth taking the time to learn.
The other modifications I made included shortening the sleeves by 1.5 inches and substituting bias tape in place of facing for the neckline. The pattern calls for a facing, but I only had 1.5 m of this fabric so I pieced together bias tape instead. I would definitely do it again in place of a facing for future versions.
I really love the wrinkly nature of this cotton gauze. Texture in any fabric is always a plus for me, but I wanted to acknowledge the fact that it can be a pain to iron. You definitely need to embrace the imperfections when working with gauze so keep that in mind when working with it the first time. It’s not the most stable of woven fabrics, but I love the texture so much that I don’t mind dealing with it.
This is the first time I’ve made this pattern, but I was instantly drawn in by the fun ruffle sleeve. The instructions were thorough and it was a simple, yet enjoyable make. The sleeve detail paired with the texture of this fabric definitely elevates a simple top and I would definitely make this pattern again.
