Before I switched over to spring sewing, I wanted to sew this beautiful wool for a new coat. The weather cooperated and temperatures dropped so my new wool coat was perfect for the last week. I wore it out with my husband to a movie and felt so stylish, not to mention warm in a very chilly theater.

The wool from Minerva is a beautiful blend of wool, polyester and viscose to have a great hand and a nice thickness. I looked through my coat patterns and went to Butterick 6244 (a Lisette pattern), which I made a few years ago. I thought this would be a perfect pattern and fabric combination.
The cutting was easy, not too many pieces and I made sure to line up the plaid on my pieces. This pattern has a bit of a tricky collar transition. Thank goodness, Liesl has a fabulous tutorial to help with the coat and the collar. The instructions are great and photos even better.
I loved sewing this fabric, wool is so amazing to sew and easy to press. It took me a bit pull the threads on all edges. You should of seen my floor!
I used my serger to finish all the seams of the coat, the only exception was the center back collar seam. For this seam, I did a flat fell seam.
My previous jacket from this pattern has been worn quite a bit but I wished I had lined the sleeves. I did just that this time. Using the same sleeve pattern, just shortening it by one inch. I did handstitched the armscye of the lining to the plaid coating armscye. Also, hand stitching the hem in place, about one inch above the frayed edge. Lining the sleeves made all the difference in putting on and off the coat.
Now for a full disclosure, I sewed the entire coat and loved making it. I put it on my dressform and admired the front, walked to the back and my heart skipped a beat. Have you noticed my mistake? Well, I didn’t until that moment, I used what I considered the wrong side for back. I shook my head a few times, looked at the inside of the coat and weighed my options. I went with the option of leaving it as is for now. There are several seams and that tricky collar, so I am going to wear it. As I wear it, I am going to be proud of my plaid matching and the design of the coat. This is a good reminder for myself, just take a moment to double check. I wanted to be full transparent in my mistake.
