Solid fabric isn’t something that catches my eye or something I tend to order but in this case a blue denim always pulls me in. Robert Kaufman Nimes Indigo Cotton Denim Fabric Blue is a beautiful textured fabric but do note this is a light denim. So when you order it, think shirts, blouses, dresses for your make. This fabric is nice and wide 56 inches is always such good thing.

This fabric washed and dryed and looked as good as it did before prewashing. I always enjoy adding a bit of embellishment to my garments and this fabric was just calling for a bit of embroidery. I went through my patterns and started getting some ideas.
I didn’t want to do too much and take away from the texture and look of this Robert Kaufman denim. So I went with Sewing and the City’s Mercer Top, which has a great shoulder detail and a sleeve flange. I knew the flange was the perfect spot for embroidery.
The embroidery needed to be simple and my software has a great Spiro feature, yes just like the toy spirograph. I used the same design with the repeat five times. To get the embroidery placement correct, I traced the pattern piece onto my fabric. After tracing, I hooped my fabric and embroidered each piece. Two front flanges and two back flanges. After I embroidered the pieces, I marked my pattern pieces with lines. These lines provided guides so I cut the all the flanges the same. I also marked the distance between the spiro designs, then marked this distance from the seam allowance for the front and back flanges. This made the transition from front to back flange the same as the other spiro designs.
The fabric was perfect for a embroidery design and I went with a light tan for the embroidery. This color worked just right for the navy denim, it showcases the embroidery perfectly.

I had not made the long sleeve Mercer before so I added an inch to the sleeves, I wish I had added more. My main reason is for winter, I like longer sleeves for winter, just more warmth. I did add elastic to the bottom of the sleeve instead for the fold and button per pattern instructions.
One other change is the back closure, I don’t like to do the loop for buttons. Since making the Mercer twice before, I have used a hook and eye for the back closure. These are easier for me to do and to close!
I am so happy with my blouse, fabric and the embroidery. It is all such a great combination and I feel like the embroidery was just the right amount. Check out this great fabric for your next project, you will love it.
