Now this is what I call a statement jacket! This all is thanks to a Minerva Kit and such a fun kit. The fabric drew me right in, a bold print consisting of black and white contrast, which makes it all quite striking. The fabric is Art Gallery in canvas, which I think is such a great weight for the Friday Pattern Company’s Cambria Duster.

I did wash and dry the fabric, which softened the canvas just a bit but the colors stayed just as vibrant. The next step was cutting, which I did postpone a day or two. I don’t know about you but with all that matching, I just have to be in the right mood. My size choice was a medium, checking the size measurement and the finished measurements. I did add length to the sleeves, a common adjustment for me. I received 4.3 meters of fabric for this project, plenty for the duster but a bit close with the matching. I did match across the jacket at the underarm seam. I use a Grainline Studio tutorial for matching plaids and it is such a good tutorial. The Cambria also has a seam at the back and I am very happy with the matching at this point. It is off just a bit but for the most part all good. Now for the part that I couldn’t match exactly – the front facing, which is the collar. These two pieces are just a bit different from left and right side. So, if you are going to order this print, order more for matching, it will give you some wriggle room. I do need to add, I did not cut the belt. With this style of coats, I never belt them. I like the look of the coat hanging open. Plus, belted just doesn’t look that good one me.

Now, time for construction, which is very clear thanks to the Friday Pattern Company’s great instructions. I worked on this for a couple days and really, I felt like the bias binding seam finishes took the longest time. That being said, the bias is a great finish for an unlined jacket. Just makes the inside look so good and polished. I did have the perfect amount of bias binding to finish all the seams and hems, which was four packages.
I so enjoyed making the Friday Pattern Company Cambria Duster, it has been on my list. The fabric from Minerva was so perfect for this project, the weight and drape a nice combination for the duster style. I will link all the items needed to make this project, which is the kit. Click those items into your cart and you will have everything in that package ready to sew up the Cambria. Happy sewing.
