This fabulous cotton fabric in great jewel tones and a fun stripe, needed to have a great top and play with the stripes. I went with a pattern, I really like, Friday Pattern Company Sagebrush Top.

As I was planning this out in my head, I had some ideas for changing the pattern to showcase the stripes My changes were
1. Cut the back yoke on the fold (eliminating the seam allowance) and I had the stripe placement vertical
2. Cut the front on the diagonal and added seam allowance so the opening for the top is now in the front.
3. Shortened the front and back body pieces and cut those with the stripe horizontal. The amount I shortened the body was measured on a similar top
4. Added a peplum, stripes vertical, this is 8” wide and I had enough fabric it make it almost twice the width of the bottom of the blouse body.
5. I also eliminated the front ruffle.
6. Sleeves were cut with the stripes horizontal

I worked for the longest time trying to get the front stripes match in a chevron look at the front opening. I just couldn’t get it to work, the fabric has more of a one way design. Each time I thought I had it, the match was not working so I went with the diagonal all working one way on the yoke.
The stripes were lined up with the sleeves and front body. I always like to do this, or at least try very hard to match this. The flow of the garment from sleeve to body to sleeve, just makes me happy.
I did baste my peplum on to make sure I had the top shortened to a good length. I had it a bit too long, so the basting was easy to remove and I shortened the top to a better length. This method works well, it really is hard to get the proportion just right even with using an existing top. The style might be a bit different, the weight or stiffness of the fabric plays into the decision and just personal preference.
After finishing my top, I loved it and found I liked to let the front ties just hang open. This fabric is just beautiful and I love the body of the fabric and the colors. The fabric is printed on so the wrong side is just plain, I probably would have self-lined the front yoke. This lining would peak out a bit when I leave the ties dangle down the front. A bit of more finished look.
I couldn’t be happier with my Sagebrush top and the changes I made, this fabric just made the top and the stripes are so good.
