What do I need most in my wardrobe? Nice new pajamas, for sure. I knew when I selected this Dashwood Studio Cotton Poplin with all the wonderful bright fun colors and the cute flowers it was perfect for summer pjs. It was time to make my pajamas and the temperature was hot, so my plans changed to sleep shorts. Since I went with sleep shorts, I had enough fabric to make a cute top to work with the shorts.
I went with my Love Notions’ Allegro Bottoms for the sleep shorts. I had just made the jogger length and really liked the fit. This pattern has a great cuff option and elastic waist, so just what I needed for cute summer pajama shorts. I did change the cuff a bit for the look I wanted. I drafted a new cuff pattern, and drew a line the lengthwise half point and added a seam allowance. On this top of the cuff (what was the middle) I stitched on the navy piping. Next was sewing the cuff to bottom of the short, turn the cuff to the right side of the shorts and turned under the seam allowance. By doing this I just topstitched the cuff in place and no need for the double layer of a cuff. For the elastic I used one inch and added a bit knit fabric for the faux drawstring. I love how these turned out, they were just what I wanted, a cuff, piping and a drawstring look.
Now for the top, I had just a bit left and I knew the pattern for this small bit. I used Sewing Revival’s Skullduggery Top, this pattern uses a woven and knit, I went with the woven for the front and knit for the back, opposite of the pattern recommendations but worked perfectly. I wanted the front to matching to the pajama shorts. The back is a navy knit, loved that I had a bit of this in my stash to coordinate with the navy piping. I didn’t cut the neck and arm bands until I had the top partially constructed. In my plan, I was going to used navy for these pieces, too. After looking at this, I wanted some pop of color, pink ribbing was the perfect pop of color and matches the Dashwood fabric. I did shorten this top quite a bit and used a straight hem instead of a curve. The length is perfect, shows the top of the shorts and tie but not too cropped.
I am so happy with my new pajamas, the plan was just for bottoms and look, I got a top, too. It was so fun going through my patterns to get the look I wanted and see what I had that would work for this very casual outfit. I was out on the porch this morning taking these photos and I could see myself actually going outside in this cute lounge set! My coffee cup was for prop only, if I was lounging, it would be a diet soda!
