If you are like me sometimes a project takes a bit to get started for the fact you don’t have all the fabric or notions you need. Well, thanks to Minerva, that problem has been solved. Hello, Minerva Sewing Kit and thank you for making my project a one-shop stop.
I was so excited to make the Nina Lee Southbank Sweater Kit and opening my package with everything I needed was so fun. My sewing kit included the fabric, pattern, clear elastic (to stabilize the shoulders), thread, twin needle and jersey needles. Just like that I was ready to sew and be creative. I love the fact that Minerva has matched the pattern with the perfect fabric and the results will be a great garment. This is such a nice feature, when we can’t feel the fabric, this helps us get it right in the pattern-fabric combination.
I went with the navy fabric colorway, spring is here but in my area it can be 70 degrees Fahrenheit one day to 30 the next day. This Nina Lee Southbank Sweater seemed like the perfect garment for those cooler days but yet feel springlike. The Southbank Sweater has three version, a dress, a longer shirt and a cropped shirt. I went with the cropped length but with 4 extra inches, I usually have to add 1-2 inches most times and this looked very cropped. I liked the look of that cropped length, it was a bit more fitted and had a sleek look. Some other features of this pattern include a drop shoulders and a funnel neck, make a very stylish shirt.
With all my kit supplies right in my sewing room, I wound a bobbin in the perfect matching thread and put in my jersey needle, which is just what I needed for my quilted texture knit fabric. The first step is to use the clear elastic to stabilize the shoulder seams, thank you kit, I have the clear elastic for this step. Nice thing is I used about 12 inches, so lots of extra clear elastic for another project.
I did add an inch to my sleeves but one thing I like about shirts with cuffs, if your sleeves are too short, just make your cuffs longer! One quick tip for cutting, I measure the neck, cuffs and waistband (if I used it) and measure the pattern piece. Then take these measurements and use your ruler and rotary cutter, quicker and a bit more precise.
I think from tracing the pattern to sewing the hem was about 1.5 hours. Remember this is the short version so that made my time to completion quicker. The sweater option has pockets, which we all love our pockets, right?
