Corduroy and soft maybe are not two words you would put together but with this fabric, soft is the first word that comes to mind. Minerva’s Robert Kaufman 21 Wale Cotton Needlecord Fabric is so soft and you just can’t stop touching it! This needlecord would be perfect for any garment you wanted to make as the drape is very nice to garments for a baby. I went with the color flame, a bright red and I ordered 3 meters. Also, this isn’t a heavy corduroy, so I will be able to wear it all through spring. In case you can’t tell, I really do like this fabric!
I had an idea of a shirt but when the fabric arrived I thought it needed to be something other than a shirt. I thought about it for awhile and had a few ideas but wasn’t positive. I reached out to a sewing friend, Karen (intostitches) We talked about several things and landed on Sew House Seven’s Burnside Bibs. We both agreed the long length. I have made the Burnside Bibs once before and cropped them. These cropped bibs see lots of wear, so I knew Karen had recommended a style I would wear so much. For the longer length, I knew I needed to add at least a couple of inches to the pattern length. I used every bit of the length of my fabric. Next time, I will add three inches to the length and get just a bit more than 3 meters of fabric. They might be a touch short, especially with these boots, so might try another pair but I am okay with these gorgeous red Burnside Bibs not touching the ground. We tend to have wet and muddy winter and spring seasons, so if my bibs are too long, then yes they will be wet and muddy. For my spring time wearing, the length will be perfect with sandals.
I made the view with the zip on the side, I like the bit more fitted option. The pattern does have quite a bit of topstitching but I find topstitching so soothing. Plus, topstitching just adds so much to a garment. One tip, go ahead and wind a couple of bobbins, you will need them for all the topstitching. I made these bibs over four nights, with the first night just for cutting.
I loved sewing this Robert Kaufman Needlecord fabric, it stitched beautifully. I did use a press cloth at all times, being careful of the nap. If red is not your color, no worries, this fabric comes in 29 color options, so available now and some for preorder.
With these red Burnside Bibs, I have so many styling options. T-shirts, mock turtlenecks, chambray shirts and the Adrienne top, which I wore for photos. If you read my post about this top you know I am loving the burgundy and red combination. I thought why not try this knit top with my Burnside bibs, oh, yes, so good! Thanks, Minerva for such great fabric and thanks Karen for a great recommendation.
